San Andreas, CA…Meet Petey (A061213), a male Pit Bull mix, about 1 year old and weighing 49 pounds Petey has been waiting for a home since August, which is a little hard to understand once you meet him. This handsome young guy has movie-star looks, a sweet temperament, and a joyful streak of puppy goofiness that hasn’t quite disappeared yet. With his tawny-and-white “tuxedo,” expressive eyes, perky ears, tongue-lolling grin, and little white-tipped tail, Petey is one seriously cute dog.

Fortunately, there’s plenty of personality to go with those good looks. Petey is friendly and comfortable meeting new people and seems genuinely happy to be part of whatever is going on. At just a year old, he still has youthful enthusiasm, but he also knows “sit,” is motivated by treats, and takes them gently. He pulls moderately on leash but listens to correction and should continue to improve with practice.

Petey has also proven to be especially good with other dogs. He has calmly and politely greeted all the canine friends he’s been introduced to at the shelter—a lovely quality in such a young dog. He appears to be housetrained, too, giving him another head start as he makes the transition from shelter life to a home of his own.

Petey was originally found straying near Highway 26 and Silver Rapids Road in Rancho Calaveras around the time of the Gann Fire. While no one knows whether he was displaced by the fire, anyone who recognizes Petey or knows a family who may still be searching for him is encouraged to contact Animal Services.

Whether his future includes a reunion or a brand-new family, Petey is ready for his happy ending. He doesn’t need a starring role in a movie—just someone to look past the kennel door and see the sweet, sociable, slightly goofy young dog waiting on the other side.

All dogs available for adoption at the Calaveras Animal Shelter are up to date on their routine vaccinations and will be microchipped. All unaltered dogs must be spayed or neutered before they can go home with you.

Animal Services has a Fee Flexibility Program!
When the shelter is over 80% capacity, adoption fees are reduced: just $40 for dogs and $30 for cats. Cats who arrive at the shelter already altered can be adopted for only $10. With the 55-5-5 Program, adopters age 55+ can adopt a pet over 5 years old for just $5.
