Requests For New Homes Due By End Of Year ~ Calaveras Recovers Finalizing List Of Building Projects

Calaveras County, CA…Fifteen months after the Butte Fire destruction has passed, volunteers from Calaveras Recovers are asking for final requests for new home construction from fire survivors who have found themselves underinsured or uninsured.

“Our trained Case Managers have worked with hundreds and hundreds of survivors since the fire and we believe we have identified all those we know of that need help with a new home,” said Allen Sender, Board Chairperson of Calaveras Recovers. “We don’t want anyone to fall through the cracks and are encouraging people we may have missed to contact us by the end of this year.” The volunteer group is finalizing its list and budget of needed homes and wants all requests to be received by the group by Dec. 31, 2016.

Calaveras Recovers will supplement a survivor’s funds from FEMA, CalOES, and any early PG&E payouts to purchase material and then will leverage that money with volunteer labor from throughout North America. Already members of the Mennonite Disaster Services have been working on two homes in the Mountain Ranch area. Other faith-based groups have pledged to come help build the dozens of homes for the uninsured: United Methodist Committee on Relief, Lutheran Disaster Response, and California Southern Baptist Disaster Service to name a few.

Fire survivors are urged to call (209)754-4606 Tuesday through Thursday in order to begin the process of evaluating short and long-term needs – including the possible construction of a modest home. Survivors still living in the area may visit the Calaveras Recovers office 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at the Mountain Ranch Community Park.

Calaveras Recovers is a post-disaster recovery organization dedicated to rebuilding homes for uninsured residents who lost homes in the 2015 Butte Fire. Calaveras Recovers operates under the 501(C)3 sponsorship of the Amador Community Foundation, Tax ID #68-0447992. Public meetings are always held the first Monday of the month at 9 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints in San Andreas.
