Sonora, CA…On September 15, 2019, at approximately 12:35am, 22-year-old, Gavin Daniel Rodgers from Sonora was riding his 1993 Harley Davidson motorcycle with a 22-year-old female passenger from Sonora. They were traveling northbound on Longeway Road at an undetermined rate of speed. As he approached Phoenix Lake Road, he failed to stop for the posted stop sign and began to make a left turn onto westbound Phoenix Lake Road. As he continued to make the left turn, he lost control of the motorcycle and it overturned onto its left side. As a result, both Mr. Rodgers and his passenger were ejected from the motorcycle. Mr. Rodgers sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision. His female passenger suffered major injuries and unfortunately, she succumbed to those injuries at the scene.
It was determined the only person wearing a helmet on the motorcycle at the time of the collision was Mr. Rodgers’ passenger. Mr. Rodgers was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and was booked into the Tuolumne County Jail for Felony DUI charges. This collision is still under investigation and the passenger’s identity is being withheld pending family notification.
This is very sad. Both alcohol and Saturday nights seem to be common factors in the deaths of way too many motorcyclists. I wish there was a way to educate riders to the realities of the effects of booze.
