Valley Springs Man is Fifteenth Case of COVID-19 Confirmed in Calaveras County

Valley Springs, CA…On Tuesday May 26, 2020, Calaveras Public Health confirmed an additional case of COVID-19 in Calaveras County. This case is an older adult male from Valley Springs. The individual is currently hospitalized. “A person at any age can become seriously ill from COVID-19, that’s why it’s important to do everything you can to protect yourself, your family, and your community,” said Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. “We live in a county with a much older population and older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for severe COVID-19 illness,” said Dr. Kelaita.

Calaveras Public Health staff is investigating this new case to determine any possible persons who may have had close personal contact with the positive individual. Close contacts will be assessed and monitored for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 illness.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus. Calaveras Public Health urges the public to:
 Stay at least 6 feet away from others
 Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
 Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissues, or your elbow (not your hands)
 Wear a cloth face covering when you are around people not in your household

“Despite recently opened areas of Calaveras County we are still in a pandemic, we must do our part to ensure the health and well-being of our most vulnerable groups,” said Dr. Kelaita.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases for Calaveras County is now fifteen. Of those confirmed cases, thirteen cases have since recovered. To date, there have been no reported deaths to COVID-19.

On May 29, 2020 Calaveras Public Health is holding a Virtual Local Assistance Center (VLAC) from 9AM-11AM. The VLAC will provide a centralized location for older adults and people with chronic medical conditions to get information about services and resources available to them at this time.
