Calaveritas Vegetation Management Burn Near Calaveritas & Old Gulch

San Andreas , CA…California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will be completing a hazardous fuel reduction burn near the intersection of Calaveritas Road and Old Gulch Road South of the community of San Andreas California on Saturday December 5th and Sunday December 6th, 2020.  The burn encompasses approximately 50 acres of annual grass, brush and oak woodland within view of Calaveritas Road.

The purpose of the burn is to clear hazardous fuels on the site to improve cattle grazing and to serve as a fuel break in the event of wildfire. This site also provides various topography and chaparral species beneficial for training on live fire, as well as Fireline bulldozer operations.

The burn is anticipated to begin between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and is expected to last 6 to 8 hours. The public may see smoke or fire during these times from Highway 49, and Mountain Ranch Road or near the community of Calaveritas.

Control lines and established roadways will be used to prevent the spread of fire to areas outside the burn unit. Firefighters will remain at scene until all hotspots are out.

Cooperating agencies assisting the CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit with the burn include the San Andreas Fire Protection District and the Calaveras County Air Pollution Control District.
