Markleeville, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) reopened Monitor Pass at State Route 89 at 8 a.m. on Friday, April 9, 2021. Crews removed snow and ice, cleared debris, and made necessary repairs to help ensure the traveling public’s safety.

Caltrans crews responsible for the road opening extend their best wishes for safe traveling to those who enjoy the recreational opportunities this part of California has to offer.

Caltrans’ goal is to have all winter passes open to the public no later than the Friday prior to Memorial Day Weekend. Late-season storms, snow accumulation and resources sometimes can hinder this goal.

However, due to the low volume of rain and snow this year, Caltrans already has reopened Monitor Pass and may be able to open the Sonora Pass on Route 108 in Alpine County and Ebbetts Pass on Route 4 in Alpine, Mono and Tuolumne counties sooner.

Our top goal is safety for the traveling public. Even though the pass is open, motorists still should be prepared for emergencies as the weather and road conditions can change rapidly.

Caltrans reminds drivers to carry chains and to be prepared for winter driving conditions. We recommend carrying blankets, water, food, a shovel, gloves, a flashlight, and sand or kitty litter to provide traction in case your vehicle becomes stuck.

Caltrans sometimes will close the road when late season storms affect the region.
