Douglas Flat, CA…The Douglas Flat Community Center has been continuously welcoming generations since the Gold Rush. Located in Douglas Flat California (near Murphys and Angel’s Camp.) Built in 1854, it is the oldest school house in Calaveras County. It served as a school for over a century. Since the beginning it has also served as a community meeting place hosting events from church services, weddings, art classes, plays, cub scouts and square dances. This rummage sale is indeed a fundraiser for the preservation of the building, however it is also a casual Open House, Meet-&-Greet for the whole community and guests. Raising awareness of the schoolhouse is the main goal here because of its potential to be rented more often for weddings, parties, art classes and shows, wine tasting events etc.
ACTIVITIES: Color guard flag raising, live music, life-size 49er diorama, raffles, silent auction, horse shoes, croquet, maypole dance and the first ever Miss Douglas Flat will be crowned for having the best 1800s costume.
In addition to this being a traditional rummage sale it is also festive event. We have invited western reenactors, feel free to dress in any period costume, cowboy, miner even steampunk. Or come as you are. Shop and leave or hang out and roast a free marshmallow.
MOTORCYCLES must be parked outside or shut off and walked in the short distance before they enter because all the tables will be relatively close to the gravel parking area.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES: The ideal location! From many different angles the schoolhouse and it’s grounds appear unchanged since the gold rush. In the background are rolling hills and a 1890s three story barn. An 1851 stone Wells Fargo office is on the street next door one can pose in front off.
Between 9AM and noon prominent local artist Judie Cain will be doing an oil painting of the schoolhouse. And will have a few paintings for sale. Here’s her website:CainArt.com
DONATIONS WELCOME!
Our team of volunteers will be accepting donations at the schoolhouse between 4-8 PM May 28. If you have something special email us whenever and we will come pick it up or we can arrange for you to meet one of us at the schoolhouse to drop it off when you have time. For sale will be clothes, building supplies, household items, original artwork, (a few steampunk pieces) furniture and antiques and collectables.
We have already collected quite a variety of donated items. There will be bargains not since Mark Twain passed through here.
VENDERS:
We are not charging for vender spaces. Although we are experienced with event planning and flea markets a rummage sale at this location is a first for us, so we are still working out all the details and don’t know how many serious shoppers we will have. We encourage venders to donate about a third of their profits if they can but we are not enforcing it.
We have room for some venders. Each space will be a bit smaller than two average parking spots. Feel free to sell whatever you want provided it is legal. No functioning guns allowed.
We plan to close the gate a bit after 8 PM Friday night and will open it back up for venders at 6AM Saturday.
Email us about reserving a spot. The best way to guarantee a spot is to show up at 8PM the night before and set up your tables or otherwise mark off your spot.
OUR MISSION is to keep the 170-year-old building’s doors open well into the future. Major structural improvements are necessary. And other renovations are planned to restore the building to its original appearance. Also landscaping improvements would make the building more desirable for rentals, such as weddings, art classes and wine tasting events.
The building is the ideal backdrop for photos! Duh.
