Murphys, CA…..After a procession through Angels Camp and Murphys a Celebration Of Life For Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz was held at Ironstone today. Members of the law enforcement community from far and wide, family, friends, members of the community and more were on hand to remember and celebrate the life of “The People’s Sheriff”
A heart attack cut the Sheriff’s life short last week and brought the community together to honor his life and legacy. His obituary has been reposted below…
San Andreas, CA…Calaveras County Sheriff Gary G. Kuntz 63 years old born June 30, 1952 in Mandan, North Dakota died October 29, 2015 of a heart attack. Gary died in his home surrounded by family and friends. He moved to Calaveras County in 1969 and was a graduate of Calaveras High School in 1970.

Gary left behind his life partner for 12 years Johanna Vermeltfoort. Three children, Amy Haire/Emmit, Sabrina House/Matt and Garret Kuntz. Gary had 9 grandchildren, 2 brothers, Daryl Kuntz /Kathy, Harlan Kuntz/Rhonda and 2 sisters Michelle Newby/Jack, Carlotta Coss/Riquildo and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Gary’s Mother is Lillian Kuntz. He was preceded in death by his Father George A. Kuntz
Sheriff Kuntz worked as a Concrete Mason from 1971-1985, graduated from Delta College Police Academy then in 1985 started his career at Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office as a Reserve/Extra Hire Officer. Sheriff Kuntz worked his way up through ranks of Patrol Officer, Detective, Sergeant, Operations Commander, Jail Commander, Lieutenant and Sheriff in 2010 to present. He was involved in numerous associations and groups and enjoyed motorcycles, cars and golf. Gary’s legacy will always be known as being deeply rooted in this county and being the “Sheriff of the people”.

His family will hold a private Mass in San Andreas for family and close friends before the Celebration and a family/friend gathering afterward in San Andreas. Sheriff Kuntz will be laid to rest in Jenny Lind that weekend.
