Caltrans to Realign Stretch of SR 4 Dubbed “Wagon Trail”

Angels Camp, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) today announced Phase 1 of a project to realign a portion of State Route (SR) 4 in Calaveras County known as the “Wagon Trail.” The estimated $31 million total project cost includes nearly $6 million in competitive Local Partnership Program funding from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

“This project will realign an undulating, two-lane portion of SR 4 to improve traffic operations, enhance motorists’ safety, and bolster the local economy,” said Caltrans District 10 Director Dennis T. Agar. “The collaboration between Caltrans, Calaveras County, and our partners exemplifies what can be accomplished when agencies work together to deliver projects that benefit the public.”

Phase 1 of the two-phase project will cover approximately three miles from Bonanza Mine Way to Appaloosa Road in Angels Camp. Construction is scheduled to be completed in late 2023. Phase 2 will improve a stretch of State Route 4 on the east side of the Wagon Trail.

The Wagon Trail project has been Calaveras County’s highest priority for the past ten years. Caltrans worked closely with the Calaveras County Department of Public Works, the Calaveras Council of Governments, the California Transportation Commission, and several other partners to bring this project to fruition.

State Route 4 connects residents to local schools and businesses; commuters to their jobs in the Valley; visitors to area shops, restaurants, and wineries; and recreation enthusiasts to natural attractions in the Sierra Nevada.
State Route 4 can be unforgiving to those who drive too fast or lose focus navigating the rolling terrain and blind curves. The realignment will provide a smoother ride and better sight distance so motorists can make safer decisions on the road. The project also calls for the construction of roadside shoulders to safely harbor disabled vehicles.

SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually split between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly based on the availability of SB 1 funds, including projects that are partially funded by SB 1. Caltrans reminds motorists to Be Work Zone Alert and slow down in construction zones for their safety, and the safety of other travelers and the crews performing these improvements.
