San Andreas, CA…In order to enhance the County’s diversion goals, the County’s Public Works Department,
Integrated Waste Management Division, has partnered with the Mattress Recycling Council to
recycle mattresses and box springs at the Rock Creek Solid Waste Facility. There is no fee to
recycle the mattresses and box springs under this program.
Beginning December 30th, 2015, residents can bring their mattresses and box springs to
the Rock Creek Solid Waste Facility to be set aside for the recycling program. In order to be
able to divert these materials from our landfill, the County requires that these materials be
brought to the Rock Creek facility and not at any of the County’s Transfer Stations. The
mattresses and box springs taken to the Transfer Stations jam up the hoppers; they become
soiled, crushed or twisted; and therefore unsuitable to be recycled and diverted under this
program.
Background: California’s Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act (enacted in 2013 and
amended in 2014) requires mattress manufacturers to create a statewide recycling program
for mattresses discarded in the state. The program is funded through an $11 recycling fee
collected from consumers when a mattress or box spring is sold beginning on December 30,
2015. The Mattress Recycling Council (or MRC) is a non-profit organization established by
the mattress industry that has been certified by CalRecycle to develop and administer the
program.
