Winter storms create a higher risk of car accidents, hypothermia, frostbite, carbon dioxide poisoning, and heart attacks from overexertion. Calaveras Public Health urges people to stay safe during winter weather:
 Stay off roads if at all possible. If you do travel, carry a flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
 Limit your time outside to avoid exposure to extreme cold. If you need to go outside, wear layers of warming clothing.
 Prepare for power outages.
 Reduce risk of a heart attack by avoiding overexertion when shoveling snow and walking in the snow.
 Learn the signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
 Call 9-1-1 for emergencies.
To keep your home warm when the power goes out:
 Avoid unnecessarily opening doors and windows.
 Close off unneeded rooms.
 Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors.
 Close curtains of cover windows with blankets at night.
 Eat well-balanced meals to help you stay warmer. Avoid alcohol or caffeine – they cause your body to lose heat faster.
 Dress warmly with several layers of loose-fitting clothing.
