Attorney General Bonta Secures Appellate Decision Striking Down Huntington Beach’s Voter ID Law

Oakland, CA…California Attorney General Rob Bonta today issued the following statement in response to the California Fourth District Court of Appeal’s decision holding that Huntington Beach’s voter identification (voter ID) law, Measure A, is unlawful and preempted by state law, reversing a lower court decision issued on April 7, 2025. Today’s decision orders the lower court to direct Huntington Beach to cease Measure A’s implementation and enforcement. Without citing any evidence that fraudulent voting occurs with any regularity in the city or has ever compromised the outcome of a municipal election, Measure A amended the city’s charter to purportedly allow the city to impose voter ID requirements at the polls for municipal elections starting in 2026.

“All along, Secretary of State Weber and I have maintained that Huntington Beach’s voter ID policy is unlawful. When the lower court disagreed, we moved quickly to file an appeal. Now, the California Fourth District Court of Appeal has sided with us,” said Attorney General Bonta. “Voting is the fundamental right from which all other rights flow, and no matter where threats to that right come from — whether from Washington D.C. or from within California — we will continue holding the line. California’s elections are already fair, safe, and secure. No city in our state, charter and non-charter alike, can make it more difficult for voters to cast their ballots. I want to thank every member of my office who played a role in making today’s outcome possible.”

Anyone care to explain how it infringes someones rights to whip out an ID to vote? You have to do it to buy alcohol, weed from the shop, buy a gun, etc. No big deal, right?

You have to show ID to register. And since we all get our ballots by mail, that validates your address. Also your signature must match.
The whole thing is already secure and the penalty for fraud is high.

Nope, not buying it. If what you say is all there is to it, then who cares if the few people who decide to vote in person have to show ID? How does that infringe anyone’s rights? Why are Democrats so against a few people showing ID to vote, sounds like it should be no biggie since everyone is legit and the system is secure. Right? Nope, nobody in a position as high as Bonta should care about that. There are much bigger problems to solve, it sounds like to me. There is certainly more to the picture than what you paint in your post.

Voter fraud is extremely rare. Out of 250,000,000 votes cast by mail between 2000 and 2020, there were 193 criminal convictions. By those numbers, a person is more likely to be struck by lightning than they are to commit voter fraud. Further, there are already measures in place to detect irregularities and investigate potential cases of voter fraud, making the need for further legislation even smaller.

Wow, then it really makes you wonder why Bonta is wasting tax payer money to fight this bill that a single district passed by the voters approval. Makes no sense, does it? Wonder if there is something more to this…

Maybe read the document? One jurisdiction can’t arbitrarily make it more difficult to vote than it is in the rest of the state.

Again, how is it more difficult for the voter who goes to a polling place to show an ID? According to previous posts, they should already have the ID because they are registered to vote. It isn’t because they are out of the country, too disabled, unable to show up for whatever reason. They have to show ID in many other areas of their lives, so what is it about voting that makes showing an ID “more difficult to vote”?? Why is Bonta worrying about this when there are much bigger fish to fry? In fact, it seems to me that Bonta is disenfranchising the voters in this district by overruling what they voted for, which is for the ID law.

I love voting by mail. It’s convenient, secure, and I can take the time to research every candidate and ballot measure at my pace. Why do you think it’s better that it’s harder to vote?

Older married women who have a name change in their past, native Americans without id, rural people who are far from polling places or the dmv to get a new id, disabled people, these are people who are unfairly impacted by your need for them to show id on Election Day. And you can’t even prove a need for it.

Tell a CHP officer when he pulls u over that you don’t have a license with your picture on it, Well officer I’m Native American, and a senior citizen, think that will work! Bonta is a beaner, and legal or illegal that vote is pretty strong in this state! By the way, all the reasons to not have voter ID were made up by a first grader, so lame!
Changing the subject, let me remind the uneducated Americans that a first responder is not a Veteran, so many of you non-Veteran men think they are one in the same, WRONG! I spent two yrs in the Army ,one of those yrs in Viêtnam, getting paid $88 a month, sleeping on the ground or wherever, getting shot at constantly, no weekends off, no showers no 3 on, 4 off going home every night to my family , or my girlfriend! Get it, a FIREBOY, ambulance crew member, are not Veterans,
