Sacramento, CA…DWR and Partners Begin Work on the California Water Plan Update 2028. Former Utica Water & Power’s Joel Metzger provides and update. “Big news this week! Governor Newsom announced the launch of a new era of water planning in California. This is the work my team leads at the State, and I couldn’t be more excited to be part of it.
Here’s the press release:
We made a short video about that talks through what this means for California: https://youtu.be/4epTCIP7SQg?si=_up1_oew_fgr5ZU8
It has now been seven months since I stepped into my role as Deputy Director at the California Department of Water Resources (DWR). Moving from local water management in the Sierra foothills to statewide responsibility, often with national and even global implications, has brought the steepest learning curve of my professional career, and I’m loving every second of it. As I’ve come up to speed, it has been a privilege to work alongside an incredibly talented team at DWR and meet hundreds of people across the state. We have garnered statewide engagement, enthusiasm, and expectations.
Now the real work begins.
Director Karla Nemeth and I recently appointed a 36-member Advisory Committee representing diverse regions and perspectives from across California. Together, we’ll help shape development of the 2028 California Water Plan, including a goal of 9 million acre-feet of additional water supply, roughly the equivalent of three New Melones Reservoirs, or enough water for the annual needs of about 18 million homes.
