Traditional Hunter Education Course to be Held at the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office

San Andreas, CA…The California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) will host a Traditional Hunter Education Course on March 21 and March 22, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The course will be held in the community room of the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office in San Andreas, 1045 Jeff Tuttle Drive.

In an effort to promote safety and conservation awareness, California enacted its first hunter education law in 1954. Today, hunter education training is required for anyone who has never held a California hunting license, does not have a hunter education certificate, or does not have a hunting license from another state or province issued within the past two years.

With spring turkey season just weeks away, this course is a great opportunity to introduce young people to California’s hunting tradition. The two-day course meets the state’s 10-hour requirement (4 hours per day plus 2 hours of homework). Attendees are encouraged to bring snacks and water, though nothing else is required. Classes will conclude before lunch each day.

The course is free and, upon successful completion, participants will earn a California Hunter Identification Card.
