The 21st annual Calaveras student exhibition ArtSpirit will open on February 2 with a reception at Calaveras Arts Council’s Gallery Store in San Andreas. The reception, where refreshments will be served, is from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. People will be encouraged to vote for their favorite artworks for peoples’ choice awards.
A popular showcase for young talent, ArtSpirit includes the art work of middle school and high school students in Calaveras County, ranging from paintings, drawings, ceramics, and photography. ArtSpirit was chosen as the title to symbolize that through art, students often feel a spirit to express their innermost feelings, whether it be rage and fear, or joy and spirituality.
This year part of the exhibition will feature artwork by students of Martha Wallace. Wallace, a popular watercolor teacher in Calaveras County, passed away in late 2017. She touched the lives of many kids through art, and they are pleased to have this opportunity to remember her.
Calaveras Arts Council has been assisting local schools for over two decades with its Arts in Education program which provides a wide range of visual and performing arts workshops and assemblies.
The exhibit provides the public with the rare opportunity to observe and purchase art created by the county’s many very talented teens.
The public is welcome to view the show during regular gallery hours, Monday –Thursday from 11:00am to 5:00pm; call for hours Friday and Saturday. The show closes on March 5. The gallery is located at 22 Main, San Andreas.
