Tuolumne County Sheriff James W. Mele Will Not Seek Reelection

Sonora, CA…From the Sheriff…”It has been a pleasure to serve as your Sheriff for the last 12 years and to serve at this agency for the last 30 years. It is with a heavy heart that I’ve decided not to seek reelection to the Office of Sheriff of Tuolumne County. The decision not to run has been the most difficult and painstaking decision of my life. This community has embraced me with open arms, and for that I’m eternally grateful.

I feel now is the time to move on and let the next generation step up and move this agency and community forward. I am very proud of the accomplishments that we have made during my tenure.

I cannot say enough about the men and women who work at the Sheriff’s Office, along with those who volunteer for this agency. In a time when the world is searching for leadership, goodness, compassion and direction, this community needs to look no further. From our newest volunteer to our most seasoned employee, they understand the need to be that beacon, where this community can look to, for refuge and safety.

I am grateful to my wife Sharon of 34 years and my children who have sacrificed so much in allowing me to have this wonderful career. My wife is the best beat partner I ever had and who was always there by my side.

It has been a great honor and privilege to be your Sheriff. Thank for your support and I will be forever thankful for your trust and your belief in me to be your Sheriff.

Sincerely,
James W. Mele Sheriff/Coroner Tuolumne County
