State Route 49/88 Sutter Street Signal Construction

Jackson, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the City of Jackson are partnering on a project to realign the two intersections where State Route 49/88 (SR-49/88) meets Sutter Street, while also installing traffic signals at the new intersection. The safety project is scheduled to begin in August 2015, with completion expected in November 2015. Crews will primarily work Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and drivers should expect 5-minute delays. No work is scheduled to be performed on weekends or holidays.

When complete, the project is intended to improve safety for pedestrians by having them cross SR-49/88 at the traffic signal. The city has identified this as a priority, in large part due to foot traffic generated by students at the adjacent Jackson Junior High School.

The project will remove 13 parking stalls on the east side of SR-49/88, but a 22-stall parking lot
will be built on the west side of the highway – for a net gain of nine stalls. That lot will include
landscaping at its southern end.

The project will improve water drainage. Traffic signals will be equipped with pre-emption
devices, halting conflicting traffic and giving the right of way to the emergency responder.
For more information regarding this project, please contact Caltrans Public Information Officer
Rick Estrada at (209) 941-6562 or district10publicaffairs@dot.ca.gov.

Construction is scheduled to begin as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents,
weather, availability of equipment and/ or materials and construction related issues.
