Inmate Attack Under Investigation at California State Prison, Sacramento

Folsom, CA…A correctional officer is recovering from injuries sustained during an attack by an inmate Wednesday at California State Prison, Sacramento (CSP-SAC). A second officer was also injured while responding to that incident. At noon Wednesday, June 13, inmate Maurice Daniels left his cell in a housing unit on Facility C. He walked past a correctional officer overseeing the area and suddenly punched him in the face.

The officer struggled with Daniels and responding staff were able to quickly quell the incident and secure Daniels in restraints using physical force and a baton.

The two injured officers were transported to an outside hospital for medical treatment.

The officer who was initially struck suffered injuries to his hand and face. He is still being evaluated for a broken nose. He has a bruised eye, swelling and redness to his face and pain in his shoulders and back. A responding officer was also treated for a suspected fracture to his hand. He was given a splint and released from the hospital, but is scheduled to return for additional tests.

Daniels sustained a laceration to his right eyebrow, requiring sutures. He was treated at CSP-SAC and will be transferred to another institution, where he will be placed in the administrative segregation unit.

Inmate movement on CSP-SAC’s C Facility is limited as officials investigate the attack.

Daniels was received by CDCR from Sacramento County on Sept. 25, 2009, with a 14-year sentence for first-degree burglary, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.

Activated in 1986, CSP-SAC is a high-security prison that houses approximately 2,155 general population inmates and employs about 1,700 people. The institution houses long-term inmates, inmates requiring specialized mental health programming, and inmates with high-risk medical concerns.
