Sacramento, CA…Assemblyman Frank Bigelow Congratulates the 5th Assembly District’s Veteran of the Year, Don Cuneo! Born near San Andreas and a graduate of Calaveras High School, Cuneo enlisted in the US Navy in 1942. Don served on the USS McCord, a destroyer that patrolled all over the South Pacific. He later went to San Diego and went to fire control school, and then he served on the USS Columbus in Boston getting ready for the invasion of Japan. He was in the Navy from November of 1942 to November 1945, earning the Good Conduct Medal and left the Navy as a Fire Control Man, 3rd Class.
In 1952, Don was elected as one of the youngest county supervisors ever in California and served the San Andreas area for 20 years in that position. From 1962 to 2001, he owned the Black Bart Inn, Hotel, and Restaurant and is a life member of the VFW Post 2600 in San Andreas. He still loves to cook for weddings, at his VFW post, and at the local senior center.
Don is a pillar of the San Andreas community and a proud Navy Veteran! We could not be more thankful for his service to the 5th Assembly District and our country! 🇺🇸⚓️
