Twain Harte Couple Welcome New Year Twins Nova Skye Matthews & Luna Rae Matthews

Sonora, CA…Kyla Grimes and Lonny Matthews, both of Twain Harte, are the stunned but excited parents of twin girls delivered by unscheduled Cesarean section at Adventist Health Sonora less than an hour into the New Year.
Nova Skye Matthews was born at 12:54 a.m. on January 1, 2019, followed three minutes later by Luna Rae Matthews, born at 12:57 a.m. Nova weighed 4 pounds, 9 ounces, and Luna weighed 4 pounds, 9.6 ounces. Born five weeks before their due date, the twins were transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto and placed in the neonatal intensive care unit for follow up care needed because of their premature status.

Grimes said she and Matthews were relaxing at home on New Year’s Eve when she began experiencing contractions. They drove to the hospital for what they thought would be a quick assessment and false labor. But Cicely Chen, M.D. determined that Kyla was in true pre-term labor and that it was safest for mom and the twins, one of whom was in a breech position, to deliver the babies via C-section.

“I’m really excited but a little overwhelmed,” said Grimes. Twins do not run in either her or Matthews’ families. “I’m just happy that they’re healthy.”

Both Grimes and Matthews have other children, but the twins are their first children together. “I think it’s awesome,” Matthews said when asked about having twins. “And I will always remember their birthday!”
These are the first twins born on New Year’s Day at Adventist Health Sonora in more than 10 years. The hospital delivered six pairs of twins in 2018.
