The past few days saw significant lightning and numerous small fires on the Tahoe National Forest. Despite the sharp increase in fire activity, Tahoe National Forest firefighters successfully contained all of the fire starts on the Forest.
Throughout the weekend, firefighters were hard at work locating and suppressing new lightning fires. Since Friday, there have been 24 new fires on the Tahoe National Forest. Nearly all of those fires were less than an acre. Two fires, Erie and Poorman, on the Yuba River Ranger District north of the town of Washington reached 3.5 and 4 acres, respectively.
“Tahoe National Forest firefighters have done an outstanding job of catching new fires and keeping them small,” said Shelly Allen, Fire Management Officer. “With several large fires now burning across California, aggressive initial attack of new fires is essential.”
Smoky conditions on the west side of the Tahoe National Forest are from other large wildfires burning in the State and not a result of local fires.
The Tahoe National Forest remains under fire restrictions. Campfires are only allowed in designated recreation areas using provided fire rings. Persons with a valid California Campfire Permit are not exempt from these restrictions and may use a portable lantern or stove that uses gas, kerosene, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel.
