Kayton embraces the exuberant and farcical commedia dell’arte aesthetic. Locals may be familiar with
her recent staged comedies: Molière’s The Imaginary Invalid, Sedaris’s The Santaland Diaries, and
Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at Brice Station. The Taming of the Shrew springs from the collision of
razorlike wits between Katherine and Petruccio, whose legacy is the I-‐Hate-‐You-‐I-‐Love-‐You
heartbeat of romantic comedies. The exaggerated theatricality of physical comedy – embraced with
gusto by this production – drive an irreverent send-‐up of the roles we so often play because society
expects it, particularly around marriage. Shakespeare’s play provides a hilarious opportunity to
consider the meaning of these social conventions in our own time.
Gender-‐bending hijinks layer on physical and social hilarity to this comedy about the roles we play in
love and marriage. Leading roles feature local favorites: Sean M. Lewis playing the fierce-‐tongued
Katherina, Shelby Rose Richardson portraying the suave and confidant suitor Petruccio, Robert
Zellers as innocent sister Bianca, and Sheila Doyle as Padua’s Cowboy aristocrat Baptista. The
hilarious clowning duo of Charlotte Calvert as Lucentio and McKenna Kelly-‐Eiding as Tranio along
with trusty servants Grumio, Emily Wilson, and Biondello, Brie Shumaway are not to be missed!
The cast is equally rounded out with Charlene West as the cunning and smarmy Hortensio, Lillian
McLeod as the comedic old man pantaloon Gremio, and Lynn Zunino as the wealthy Vincentio. The
creative team was pulled from across the country including: Associate Producer and Lighting
Designer Laura J. Eckelman (Washington D.C.), Assistant Director Janet Cunningham (New Haven,
CT), Technical Director Ross Aldrich (Vallecito, CA), Scenic Designer Misty Amber Day
(Sacramento, CA), Stage Manager Suzie DeSimone (Murphys, CA), Graphic Designer Ryan Anderson
(New York, NY), and Dramaturg Ryan M. Davis (San Francisco, CA).
