As with most issues children struggle with; constant and open communication is the best way to help them navigate potentially dangerous and harmful situations. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office would like to offer the following tips to assist patents with monitoring their children’s social media activity.
• Set limits for how much time, and time of day, is spent on-line and using social media.
• Discuss with teens how to recognize inappropriate solicitations and to report them immediately.
• Teach them that cruel jokes and embarrassing photos posted on social media never really go away. Teach them not to post anything they would feel embarrassed about later.
• Take advantage of safety controls. Most devices have safety controls that you can enable that block age-inappropriate material and sites
• Keep up to date with the various social media platforms and stay involved. Social media isn’t going away any time soon.
