Lake Tahoe, CA/NV…The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, the tourism agency representing California and Nevada on the South Shore, is reminding visitors that nonessential travel is still prohibited for the holiday weekend by governmental and health organizations. California’s stay at home order is still in place and the Lake Tahoe Basin area of El Dorado County has implemented a travel ban by order of the El Dorado County public health officer. FAQs.

“We’re closing in on that glorious day when we can safely welcome everyone back with open arms, but for now we’re required to follow the guidelines that health and governmental officials have established,” said Carol Chaplin, CEO and president of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “We certainly understand and appreciate everyone’s desire to visit, and hopefully this current phase is short-lived.”

Hospitality and leisure lodging is currently prohibited in California under Gov. Newsom’s Stage 2.

Nevada Gov. Sisolak has approved implementation of Phase 1 re-opening with strict guidelines for limited hospitality and leisure lodging; however, gaming is still closed during Phase 1.

When lodging establishments begin to re-open and accept reservations, tourism officials recommend guests contact the property directly for clarity on the latest policies and specific guidelines.

While South Lake Tahoe’s natural geography makes social distancing possible with its many outdoor activities like hiking, trails, bike paths, beaches — currently open to residents — the impact of visitors on small communities across the lake could quickly overwhelm existing resources and risk lives due to the limited capacity of health facilities.

USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has lifted the closure on select recreation sites, not all sites and gates are open, and restrooms and trash service are unavailable. Guests are required to follow all road parking guidelines and restrictions and adhere to Leave No Trace recommendations to pack all materials in and out.
