San Andreas CA…Nationwide, taxpayers pay billions of dollars annually helping communities, organizations, businesses, and individuals recover from disaster. Some disasters are predictable and, in many cases, much of the damage can be reduced or even eliminated. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has targeted natural disaster loss reduction as one of its primary goals. The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires local governments to have a FEMA-approved Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) to maintain eligibility for certain disaster assistance and hazard mitigation funding programs.
Calaveras County is the lead agency for the 2015 LHMP Update. The purpose of this LHMP Update is to assess risk to natural hazards such as wildfires, floods, drought, and other severe weather events; implement actions to reduce future losses; and maintain eligibility for federal mitigation funds in accordance with the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000. Partnering with the County in this planning effort is the City of Angels Camp.
This process began in March of 2015 with public and planning team meetings and the establishment of a planning committee comprised of representatives from various local, state, and federal agencies. The public review draft is now available and includes an updated natural hazard risk assessment and mitigation strategy.
