San Andreas, CA…The Sierra Foothills Chapter of the California Native Plant Society held a native plant sale on April 16 at CCWD’s headquarters. Hundreds of plants, including trees, shrubs, bulbs, perennials, grasses and water-wise plants, were available for purchase. Educational booths were also set up to impart the virtues of native plants. The USFS was also on hand with pine tree seedlings for local landowners.

Judy Dean, who is a CNPS member and former master gardener, raved about the benefits of choosing to grow native plants.

“Native plants take so little care,” she enthused. “People don’t have time to spend hours and hours in their garden. Once native plants get their roots down, they can grow without water or with deep water once a month. They are very drought tolerant and take almost no pruning. You can mulch them with rocks or pine needles or whatever you want and hardly any weeds will come up. They are just so smart!”
