Murphys, CA…Robert Dominik Campana passed away on Jan. 21, 2018 surrounded by his devoted loving family. He was born Aug. 1, 1929 in San Francisco, California to Dominik Campana and Helen Mendler Campana, the first of two sons. He graduated from Lincoln High School. Following graduation he enlisted in the Navy. He served on Treasure Island where he met the love of his life, Diane Roberts. They married on Aug. 17, 1952 and began their life in South San Francisco. They had three children, Robert Jr., Kathleen and Laureen. He worked for the family business started by his father with his brother Richard.
Together he and his wife, who had a shared love of the mountains, built a log cabin in Murphys in 1964, where they eventually were able to move in 1970. He loved raising his family in the foothills. The most important thing in his life was his family. He always lived by the motto of “family first”. After family, he gave his all to the community.
He served in many community organizations, and his longest and most devoted service was to the Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital board of trustees, which he was a member of for over 30 years. He felt committed to creating the best health care for the people who were his neighbors and friends. He worked at Middleton’s Mark Twain Center with Hank and Bobby Middleton, who became good friends, for over 30 years. He loved connecting with the people in his community through the store. He was grateful to be able to travel the world with Diane and capture the trips with photos. A favorite trip was to Africa to see majestic lions.
He will be remembered for many things: love of family, sense of humor, and generosity. He will also be remembered for his love of his children and grandchildren, from comforting crying babies to encouraging fledgling teenagers.
He also had a great love for his family pets; Elle his sheltie had a special place in his heart. He was truly a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by Diane, his wife of 65 years, children Robert Jr. (Lynna), Kathleen, Laureen (Phil), grandchildren; Annie (Andy), Katrina (Alain), Audrey (Zach), Caroline, Melissa, Jennifer (Adam), Claire and Marie. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren; Jack and Josephine, Dylan, Emery and Wyatt. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved aunt and brother.
A memorial will be held on Saturday March 24, at 2:30 P.M. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 509 Algiers St., Murphys, CA, followed by a Celebration of his Life at the Native Sons Hall on main street in Murphys, CA.
