Plymouth, CA…Iryna passed away peacefully at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital after surviving a serious stroke in 2012 that left her paralyzed but never broke her loving spirit. She was born Irma Elisabeth Baumler in Bamburg, Germany on April 13, 1931 and grew up in Bad Staffelstein, Germany. After serving as governess to a diplomat’s children in London and Beirut, she immigrated to the United States at age 27 and moved to Chicago, IL, where she married Billie Johnson in 1960. She and Billie had four children and were blessed with two granddaughters. She was incredibly devoted to her family as well as her friends and community. In later years she worked happily doing the Lord’s work at Moriah Heights, where she served as Treasurer for the Hope Foundation until 2007. In 1998, Billie passed away, and in 1999 she remarried widower Mike Maybrook, with whom she shared a loving life until Mike’s death in 2007.
Iryna loved nutrition and was ahead of her time when she moved the family to an all-vegan diet in 1965. She gave many cooking classes, demonstrating how to make wholesome foods, and was sought out to oversee the preparation of delicious vegan food for the people attending her church’s many camp meetings. She loved to cook, garden, write letters, grow beautiful roses, and had a special affinity for lighthouses, appreciating how they light our way through darkness.
Iryna is survived by her loving children, Madi Yates (John) of Oxford, MD, Annette Johnson (Florian) of Plymouth, CA, Michele Norris (Scott) of Incline Village, NV, James Johnson (Martha) of Fallon, NV, and her adoring grandchildren, Ruth Chobanu-Levy (Josh) and Anna Chobanu (David), both of Sherman Oaks, CA. She is also survived by her niece and nephews in Germany – Helga, Michael, Alex, their children and late brother’s wife Gertrude.
We offer sincere thanks to her personal caretakers, doctors and the staff of Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital of San Andreas, CA for providing the best care in her last years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Whispering Pines Christian School at 240 Highway 16, #1, Plymouth, CA 95669. A religious service for family and close friends will be held at the Moriah Heights Seventh-Day Adventist Reform Movement Church at 3pm on July 3, 2015.
