Sheriff Joe Lombardo Releases Final Criminal Investigative Report in 1 October Mass Shooting

Las Vegas, NV…Sheriff Joe Lombardo held a press conference this morning to announce the release of the final Criminal Investigative Report in the 1 October Mass Casualty Shooting. The 183-page report prepared by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Force Investigation Team marks the conclusion of the criminal investigation into this incident.

A preliminary investigative report was released in January, 2018. The department would not as a practice release a preliminary report, but made the exception in this case due to the unique circumstance. Additionally, a lawsuit brought against the department by multiple media outlets earlier in the year resulted in the LVMPD releasing hundreds of hours of video, 911 call recordings and reports during the investigation. These weekly releases resulted in questions about the actions of individual officers. Sheriff Lombardo noted today that this is a criminal investigative report and not a review of officers’ actions or responses. Those investigations are internal personnel matters and will not be released publicly.

The document expands on the preliminary report by providing additional information about the suspect’s movements in the days leading up to the shooting. Additional information contained in the final report are:

 Summaries of interviews completed with personnel, both police and civilian, who played significant roles in the incident.

 A more detailed narrative as to investigative responsibilities that various agencies and agency sections handled.

 Summaries of forensic analysis conducted by the FBI’s lab in Quantico, VA related to the weapons used, including the gun the suspect used in his suicide.

 A lock interrogation summary, financial analysis and summaries of interviews with the suspect’s family and doctor.

 Autopsy related documents from the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
Sheriff Lombardo expressed relief that the investigation is now completed unless further information comes to light. He also noted that many of the questions regarding this incident have been answered except for the most troubling question of why.
