Calaveras County Experiences Increase in Respiratory Virus Activity

San Andreas, CA…Calaveras County Public Health reminds the public to stay aware of respiratory virus symptoms and prevention measures as cases begin to rise across the state. The recent increase is made up of a combination of illnesses including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, pneumonia, and COVID-19. An early wave of RSV coupled with other respiratory viruses has led to increased hospitalizations among children and contributed to stresses in the pediatric healthcare delivery system in California and across the US.

As social gatherings become more frequent during the holidays, it is important to recognize common symptoms of these respiratory viruses such as fever, chills, cough, runny or stuffy nose, and fatigue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported over 11,000 hospitalizations and at least 1,800 deaths due to pneumonia, influenza, or COVID-19 within the last week. Calaveras County has experienced an increase of COVID-19 cases in the last month from an average of 1 case a week to about 10 new cases a week. If you are experiencing symptoms, get tested for COVID-19, stay home and contact your healthcare provider as needed.

“Preventing the spread of a respiratory virus can help save life,” said Dr. René Ramirez, Calaveras County Health Officer. “Babies, children, and our aging populations are at highest risk for hospitalization or death. Vaccination helps prevent infection and can also prevent serious outcomes in people who get vaccinated but still get sick with flu or COVID-19,” added Dr. Ramirez.

Receiving your annual flu vaccine and an updated COVID-19 vaccine offers the best protection from serious infection, hospitalization, and death.
