Avery, CA…Good Morning Everyone, All VUSD Schools including Hazel Fischer, Avery Middle School, Michelson Elementary and Independent Study will be closed today, Wednesday, March 1st. Our team has been out assessing road conditions and inspecting school sites since 4am this morning. An additional 6-12 inches of snow accumulated overnight between Forest Meadows and Arnold. Road conditions, especially residential areas, are still hazardous in many areas from the Utica Grade up to Arnold due to the large volumes of snow, freezing temperatures and limited resources to clear county roads.

Additionally, power is out at Avery Middle School with PG&E projecting it will be restored sometime this evening. All of the phone lines and internet are down as well for all school sites. Based on this collection of factors caused by the severe winter storm we have determined it is not safe to open schools today, even with a 2 hour delayed start.

We do anticipate being open tomorrow. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we make these difficult decisions.
