Mark Twain Medical Center, Small, but Mighty for Women’s Health!

San Andreas, CA…Mark Twain Medical Center may be small, but it’s exceptionally powerful in its care and commitment to women’s health. As a 25-bed hospital, it might not be the largest in the tri-county area, but its cutting-edge breast health technology is impressive, and I’m excited to share it with you.

October is a month dedicated to raising awareness about women’s health—a major focus for our county. In the Radiology Department, Mark Twain offers advanced diagnostic tools, including the Tomo Digital Breast Synthesizer (also known as DBT 3D) for mammograms. Acquired and installed in 2020, this 3D imaging technology provides highly detailed breast images that enhance the early detection of breast cancer and reduce callbacks for false positives. Additionally, this system applies less pressure than older machines, resulting in a more comfortable experience.
The hospital also features a state-of-the-art GE ultrasound unit, purchased recently, and an MRI Breast for more advanced testing. All equipment is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
Dr. Athwal, a highly skilled radiologist, leads the team with deep expertise in Women’s Imaging. Karen Henderson, a DBT 3D technician, brings extensive experience in mammographic imaging and is known for her meticulous work and compassionate approach.
Early detection is vital. If you’re 40 or older, now’s the time to get a mammogram to establish a baseline. For those with a family history of breast cancer, speak to your doctor about starting screenings before 40.
By age 65, all women should consider a bone density test. A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test, recommended every other year, can be done with a quick, painless DEXA scan—especially important for those with a family history of osteoporosis.
Empower yourself with knowledge to safeguard your health. Support local healthcare, keep it convenient, and prioritize well-being.
