Since Friday, people working for Elon Musk who do not appear to be government employees have taken over the US Treasury’s and OPM’s payment mechanisms, have downloaded the most sensitive personal information of millions of Americans to private servers, and have locked government employees out.
Musk’s people, unilaterally and without any legal authority whatsoever, are single-handedly diverting or withholding federal dollars which Congress has appropriated by law and are deciding which parts of the federal budget aren’t, in their minds, necessary.
It is impossible to overstate the levels of illegality we’re witnessing. It is impossible to overstate the seriousness of this situation. If any other actor had done what Musk has done over the past three days they’s be charged with scores of felonies. They’s find themselves in prison for decades.
