Murphys, CA…Daily horror stories of breached secure personal information only reinforce the necessity to securely shred personal records and information in order to protect from identity theft. The members of the Angels-Murphys Rotary Club have created an easy one-stop drop off for all Calaveras residents to shred their personal documents on April 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in a FREE community service opportunity. Load your car up and come for the drive-through event where club members will unload your car and securely shred your personal documents.
Related Rotary Community Service Director, Sabrina Julian, who is also a Financial Planner and Fiduciary, “These are scary times related to ensuring that personal documents are disposed of properly. We are delighted as a Rotary Club to partner with Cal-Waste to dispose of up to 10 banker boxes per household in a secure shredding opportunity. Residents can watch their documents being destroyed, and have peace of mind knowing that their secure data is not at risk.”
Julian noted that the event is provided free of charge, although donations are gladly accepted by the Rotary Club to benefit the organization’s high school scholarships, which in the 2025 school year are expected to award $10,000 to Bret Harte seniors.
“Whether a community member can contribute to the scholarship fund is simply a bonus. This is the right thing to do. Our aim as a community service organization is to provide services that protect our residents from any financial abuse. We are delighted to support this partnership to shred sensitive financial documents and encourage anyone that is interested to place documents free from binders or heavyclips in the trunk of their car on shredding day. Volunteers will help off-load those documents and you can have peace of mind that your financial information is not at risk as you observe the shredding process.”
E-Waste recycling will aso be available at a cost of $10 per hard drive. Items not eligible include vacuum cleaners, kitchen appliances, lamps/light bulbs/large household appliances and batteries.
The Identity Theft Resource Center reports that 2024 data breaches reached the second highest level since they started tracking them in 2005. The number (3,158) fell just 44 short of 2023’s record level. Because the total includes six “mega-breaches” involving 100 million to 560 million victims, the total number of notices served to individuals quadrupled from 400 million to 1.7 billion.
As local Rotarians, Julian noted, “We take seriously our mission to serve our local community. We hope residents will take this opportunity to safely dispose of their documents in a no-cost opportunity in partnership with Cal-Waste”.
