Calaveras Community Foundation Presents Liz Darby Airola Scholarships for Nursing Students

San Andreas, CA…Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) presented two scholarships recently to two Columbia College students. Funds were from the Liz Darby Airola Fund for Nursing Students. Each scholarship was in the amount of $500.

Columbia College student, Max Golay, was the first awardee. Determined and driven are words that describe Max. His instructors gave glowing reports of what an excellent student Max is as he balances a job, his wife and young son and his educational pursuit to become a nurse. His upbringing in the Bay Area taught him that community service not only helps others but also helps you. As a young man, he volunteered at the Richmond Rescue Mission doing whatever duties needed to be done. At age eight, he joined the San Francisco Boys Chorus and believes that we should all sing and dance more. A well-rounded student, and a first generation college student, Max is committed to set an example for his young son by earning his AS nursing degree at Columbia and then transferring to further his educational dreams.

Savannah Mattingly, also a student at Columbia College, is pursuing her nursing degree also. Early in life, Savannah, knew that she wanted to be a nurse some day. As a high school senior, Savannah pursued her interests and served as a student intern in the ICU department at Mark Twain Medical Center. That experience confirmed even further her aspirations of becoming a nurse. Now, she works full-time as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant in the Medical Surgical Unit at Sonora Regional Medical Center, as well as attending college full-time. Savannah, eventually, wants to earn a Bachelors Degree of Science in Nursing. Being a nurse and helping others is Savannah’s driving force and she knows that her determination and motivation will result in accomplishing her goal.
